Our Warranty

Reclaimed wood is a natural product that is often a century or more older, originally harvested from first growth trees. Consequently, true reclaimed wood cannot be graded nor selected for color and grain, width and surface imperfections such as nail holes, knots, knot holes and checking cracks which are natural characteristics of reclaimed woods. Many of these imperfections are filled at the time of installation or hidden by your flooring installer in closets or under cabinets. It is the flooring installers responsibility to ensure the flooring planks with the characteristics described above are placed in your room(s) in the manner that best satisfies the look and appeal that you desire.

Our reclaimed flooring and paneling products are generally provided in random widths and random lengths to best utilize rough material and minimize waste. Custom widths can be provided, subject to availability of rough material on hand.

Limitations and Exclusions

Old Wood Salvage warrants its reclaimed wood flooring products, in their original manufactured condition, shall be:

  1. Sound in structure;

  2. Free from natural decay, and

  3. Free from defects in milling and drying.

Milling defects in our reclaimed wood flooring products shall be defined as defects of the tongue and groove (T&G) and anti-cup relief cut in the bottom of the flooring plank.

During manufacturing, our reclaimed flooring shall be dried to a moisture content of 6% to 9% which is industry standard.  Small variations in moisture content can be expected due to seasonal relative humidity changes during the shipping process.

Our structural and manufacturing Warranty means the product shall be free from the defects outlined above.

Products sold as waste, seconds or “as is” are not covered by this Warranty.

Old Wood Salvage reserves the right to verify any claims of defects by inspection and have samples removed for technical analysis.

Tips on Acclimatizing & Maintaining the Beauty of your Reclaimed Floor

  1. Always consult with your flooring installation contractor to ensure the conditioning requirements are appropriate for your environment. The tips below are offered only for information purposes when considering an investment in reclaimed flooring.

  2. According to the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA), wood floor acclimatization is “the process of adjusting (conditioning) the moisture content of wood flooring to the environment in which it is expected to perform”.

  3. Understanding equilibrium moisture content (EMC) is the first step. EMC is the moisture content at which wood neither gains nor loses moisture when surrounded by air at a given relative humidity (RH) and temperature. Every RH and temperature has an associated EMC. For example, if the RH in a home is maintained at 40% with a temperature of 21 degrees Celsius (70 degrees Fahrenheit), the EMC will be 7.7%. A moisture content of 6% to 9% for your flooring corresponds to a relative humidity level between 30% to 50%. Regular moisture readings will indicate when wood flooring has stabilized and it is in equilibrium (EMC) with its environment.

  4. The job site must be ready to receive the flooring i.e. closed in, windows in place, furnace and HVAC operational to stabilize relative humidity and temperature. The flooring must be acclimated in the same room(s) where it will be installed.

  5. When building new or renovating, your hardwood flooring should never sit on site when drywall or painting trades (wet trades) are working.

  6. Solid strip wood flooring (less than 76 mm wide/3" wide) that has been acclimatized properly will not have more than a 4% moisture content difference between the flooring and the subfloor. For wider flooring (more than 76 mm wide/>3" wide) there should never be more than a 2% moisture content difference.

  7. Hardwood flooring will always perform best when the environment is controlled and remains within a relative humidity range of 30-50%. The temperature should also be controlled within a range of 15-25 degrees Celsius (60-77 degrees Fahrenheit).

  8. Please note that there are specific requirements for engineered flooring installed below grade or over radiant heating systems. The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) website is a good resource and starting point for research on radiant heating and hardwood flooring.

Live Edge Products

Old Wood Salvage sources a wide variety of live edge species according to size ranges required by our customers. Once sawn to slabs, each flitch is stickered and evenly weighted during the air drying cycle within a well ventilated storage area. Following air drying, each flitch is professionally kiln dried to a moisture content of 6% to 9% and is now ready for delivery to our customers.

Our goal is to deliver a high quality product to our customer, however it is a maxim that nature will take its course and wood being a natural product reacts to changes in environment. The measures we take over the course of the drying process certainly help to minimize checking, cracking and cupping as much as possible.

Old Wood Salvage warrants its live edge products shall be properly dried in accordance with the process described above. Defects such as checking and cracking attributable to natural movement in the wood are not covered by our warranty.
